You don’t believe in God or gods?
I’m looking for people in Berlin and Brandenburg to take part in my photographic project Portraits of Unbelief.
I’d like to hear about your experience and make a portrait with you.
Who can take part?
You might describe yourself as an atheist, agnostic or humanist; as non-religious, spiritual but not religious, or culturally religious — or prefer not to use a label at all.
You don’t need to be an expert on religion, or have an extraordinary story. There is no “right kind” of non-believer I’m looking for.
What is Portraits of Unbelief about?
I’m interested not only in what you don’t believe in, but in what you do believe in.
What gives your life meaning? What guides the way you live? How do you make sense of life’s bigger questions? Is there anything you consider sacred?
Through portraits and personal stories, the project explores the many different experiences that sit behind the simple label “non-believer”.
What would taking part involve?
First, we talk.
We’ll meet for a relaxed conversation, online or in person, so I can hear more about you and your experience.
Then, we plan the portrait together.
We’ll choose a place that feels right — perhaps your home, or somewhere else that matters to you.
Then, we make the photographs.
The photography usually takes around two hours and is a collaborative, unhurried process.
A special opportunity in November
ARTE is making a short film about artists and creatives responding to questions of faith, religion and non-belief this November. The programme will be broadcast on ARTE in Germany and France and published online.
They would like to film me photographing one participant for Portraits of Unbelief in Berlin or Brandenburg between 10 & 18 November 2026.
The main thing would be agreeing to be filmed while I photograph you. If you’re also happy to answer one or two short questions about your experience of non-belief on camera, that would be welcome — but it isn’t essential.
You do not have to take part in the ARTE film to take part in my photography project.
If the film isn’t for you, I would still very much like to hear from you.
About me
I’m Aubrey Wade, a British documentary photographer based in Berlin. I’ve been photographing and interviewing people about non-belief around the world since 2017.
I work collaboratively and take time to get to know the people I photograph. We’ll talk everything through before making any photographs.
You can see more of my work across this website and can come back to this page by clicking on “Take Part” in the menu at any time.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch!
Interested?
Getting in touch doesn’t commit you to taking part. We can simply have a conversation first. Please complete this form:
